Why Korean popular culture?

We talked about globalization and the spread of Korean popular culture today in class. I know that we briefly discussed it on the first day, but to be more specific. So just as a personal curiosity, where does your interest in Korean popular culture lie? Are you fans of certain groups? Where does your personal interest intersect with your academic interests, if any? In other words, why are you taking a class on Korean popular culture and maybe not in some of your other interests?

Again, if you don't feel comfortable revealing who you are, write anonymously and email me to let me know it was you.

Thanks

also, PLEASE feel free and I strongly encourage interactions by looking at the other comments. You don't always need to comment on what I post, but look at what others post as well and comment on their statements.

  1. After today's class, it made me actually think about where my K-pop and K-rock interest in music came from. I suppose it was through globalization. It started when I was in middle school watching and reading Japanese manga and anime. Then it spread to Japaneses drama, movies, and then I moved onto Chinese and Korean drama and music. I would be interested in one subject, and then started researching and expand to new types of popular culture. That phase kind of slowed down in high school. However, recently, I got back into Korean music and it was really though an interesting way. I was listening to Kesha's Run Devil Run, and my sister told me that it was a cover from SNSD. Talk about globalization! Through that, I got back into popular artists such as G-Dragon, Tae Yang, Brown Eye Girls, and DBSK. I find that their music are more catchy and interesting then American music even though they sound so similar. I suppose I'm taking this course because of curiosity and for learning something more then just music from Korea. Why not something else?...Well, I just got into my K-pop phase.

  2. I would say I agree to what Kim Tran said above because I start to listen and become interested in Japanese and Korean pop culture through globalization. Start off with Japanese manga and RPG games then it moves on to music, drama and movies. I am a die-hard-fan to Johnny's Entertainment(Jimusho) artist and i used to follow every single songs, drama, show and movie that is related to Jimusho artists. Usually, during September to December every year, all their artist is busy with their concerts. So, drama keep most of my time occupied during those time but in year 2009, there is not much of drama or show to watch. So, I try to listen to Kpop for the first time, thanks to my friend who keep on urging me to let her play big bang song in my car. So, that really the starting point for me to start in Kpop. Now, basically I am listening to Jpop, Kpop and also one group from Thaipop. My favorite group in Kpop would be U-KISS and I know most of the idol group now except for the new girl groups. I am taking this course out of curiosity on what we can learn in this class and I am taking it as my relief class aw well. My other class this semester is really stressful one cause it is all business major class so by taking this class, I can spare some of my time to do things that i really love to do.
