I flagged this news piece so I could write on it. Jackie Chan is creating a male Kpop group called JJCC (I read somewhere it was for Jackie Jackie Chan Chan... but I can't seem to find that report anymore. It's looking like they will go by "Double JC").
Anyway, in their 20s, 4 of the members are Korean and 1 is Australian-Chinese.
So why did I feel the need to flag this news report?
Well first.. because it's Jackie Chan. And there is not only K-pop afficandos covering this news, but also random newspapers as well. In case you don't know who Jackie Chan is, instead going into details, I'll just refer you to trust old Wikipedia. Jackie Chan also has a website you can check out.
Anyway, maybe you don't care about Jackie Chan and the fact that he's making another K-pop group in the midst of many already.
Well here is a couple things that came to mind for me:
1. It explains a lot why Jackie Chan has been infiltrating into the Korean variety shows a lot in the past couple of years. Jackie Chan has always stated that he loves Korea and so I don't think it was solely a promotional technique, but it definitely was well-received into variety shows like Happy Together, Running Man, Knee Drop Guru, ect. My assumption is that this will only help him when he is trying to push his group because he has contacts in the industry. He has met with multiple Korean entertainers (Super Junior Choi Siwon, G-Dragon, Brown Eyed Girls) when they were in China and he also sees them when he visits Korea as well.
2. I am curious, however, if this will be enough to rise them to popularity. Yes, the interest is high, but for now just curiosity. Apparently the 5 members all speak Korean, English, and Chinese - will sounds like they will likely branch into the Chinese market. Previous groups under a big celebrity (Rain - MBLAQ would be an example) had difficulty rising to fame at least initially, even though they spoke about Rain a lot of variety shows (and I presume that is how they got in the variety shows in the first place). I would guess that regardless of this marketing strategy through Jackie Chan, they will have to stand out in another way to continue momentum with interest, particularly in the Korean music scene, where the big music companies have much more advantages and marketing techniques (for example, using their older popular groups to promote new groups) that this group will not be able to utilize.
3. The Chinese market. Curious how this will play a role, obviously with Jackie Chan but also with the fact that they all speak Chinese. I'm assuming, for obvious reasons, that it isn't coincidental and China has proven to be a market several companies want to tap into as well (including big companies like SM and JYP).
It looks like their teaser is out, so I guess we'll see soon enough. On a note about the fact that they recruited an Australian-Chinese too, there are significantly less Australians in the Korean music market (both as non-Korean and also not from the U.S., where the non Korean Koreans tend to hail from), and I'm curious what his language background is as well.
